Waterproof technology is really on another level nowadays, allowing us to do our swim practices while listening to favorite music or just relax in the pool during a hot summer.
Most of the waterproof MP3 players will allow you to use them only in shallow depths, however, there are MP3 players which are made to go even 10 feet in the water.
However, most of the time MP3 players won’t survive in water deeper than 10 feet, and the reason for that is because the water pressure will compromise MP3’s waterproof seal.
Types of Waterproof MP3 Players
Waterproof MP3 players work the same way like non-waterproof MP3 players do, however, they have a better protection and waterproof seal in order for customers to be able to use it in the water.
However, there are a few different types of waterproof MP3 players.
Three most known types of waterproof MP3 players are:
- WaterFi iPod Shuffle
- Dolphin Touch
- Finis SwiMP3
WaterFi iPod Shuffle might look the same like a non-waterproof iPod shuffle, however, all the internal parts and the complete device has been waterproof sealed. It has also been customized for easier access for swimmers. It has a clip which makes attaching it onto the swimmers’ goggles easier. The software you’ll use to put music on WaterFi iPod Shuffle is iTunes, which is great for people who already have and use Apple products. You can just sync the playlist without needing to organize it from a scratch.
Dolphin Touch has a shape of rolled coins. It’s very small and practical, and the design gives it better waterproof sealing. It has a lock to prevent you from accidentally pressing the touchscreen. Keep in mind that the earphones should be firmly attached to the Dolphin Touch MP3 players, or their waterproof seal might be compromised.
Finis SwiMP3 works in a very different way than other types of MP3 players. Finis SwiMP3 players don’t use earphones, and you might be wondering well how do you listen to the music then? It uses a jawbone conduction to let swimmers listen to music without having the earphones. It’s great for people who need to wear earplugs, and it also has fewer wires to deal with.
How To Know If The MP3 Player Is Waterproof
Now when you know the most common types of waterproof MP3 players, it’s important that you learn how to find a waterproof player.
There are many manufacturers that claim their MP3 player is water resistant, however, that’s not the same as waterproof.
Water resistant will most likely survive small splashes of water, such as rain or handwashing, however, it won’t be able to survive a dip in the water.
A waterproof MP3 player is something you should look out for, and every manufacturer who produces waterproof players will clearly state it on the packaging. Waterproof means that the MP3 player is sealed and that the water won’t get inside the player and destroy its components.
Also, every waterproof device will be graded with a depth they are waterproof to, so make sure that you pay attention to it as well.
How To Choose a Waterproof MP3 Player
You know the types of MP3 waterproof players, and you know how to find a device which will be completely waterproof.
Now it’s time to learn how to choose which one to get. There are different factors you should pay attention to other than a type and waterproof depth.
Features to look out for:
- File types
Size is really important as you will want it to be as compact as possible, with an easy way to attach it to your goggles. You don’t want a big MP3 player which will just get in your way while you’re swimming or relax in the water. Also, pay attention to the buttons, as you’ll want fewer bigger buttons to change the track very easily while you’re in the water.
Storage depends on how many songs and hours of music would you like to carry with you in the water. Storage isn’t very expensive nowadays, and if you aren’t on a really tight budget, I’d suggest you go for a bigger storage size which will allow you to carry many songs so you don’t get to listen to the same songs over again.
The software will have to be as friendly as possible. You don’t want to spend hours organizing songs and figuring out how to add them to the MP3 player. iTunes is a great software if you’re familiar with, especially because you have the ability to just sync your existing playlists which is a huge time saver.
File types are important too. You’ll want to have an MP3 player which won’t give you headaches if you get to have a different music format than usual.
Earphones are important for your comfort. You’ll want to check out the earphones too because you want the ones which will fit you perfectly and won’t get in your way during swimming. The better the earphones are, the quality sound will be too.
Price is the last but not the least important factor. The more you pay, the better waterproof MP3 player you will get. However, it’s important that you know your budget and that you stick to it. If you’re on a really tight budget I’d highly recommend you to save some more money in order to get the best waterproof MP3 player possible.
Another thing I didn’t mention is that if you already have an existing MP3 player which unfortunately isn’t waterproof, you are still able to make it waterproof.
There are waterproof cases which will make your MP3 player waterproof, however, the only downside to that is that you will need to purchase waterproof earphones separately.
If that seems like a better option to you, I’d say go for it. If not, you can always find some really good waterproof MP3 players out there for a reasonable price.
What MP3 player do you use? Is it waterproof?
